Card literacy

Read card order before choosing a play

A simple comparison exercise with controlled conditions.

Name the question

Our practice compares two ordinary cards in the same suit, using the stated rank order. That deliberately avoids asking you to infer a hidden trump, a legal response or a strategic best play from missing information.

Use a visible reference

Open the card ranking page. Point to each rank in order, then compare a pair. Explain the answer before checking it. Treat a mistake as a clue about what to revisit rather than a reason to rush the next question.

Change one thing

Try another pair in the same suit before changing the suit. Keeping one condition fixed helps you notice the role of rank. Later, return to a complete rules source for examples that involve a stage of play or a trump declaration.

Keep the result in proportion

A short practice score measures this exercise only. It is not a rating of overall playing strength, bidding skill or ability to work with a partner.
